A few from the other day

Redpoll

Having a good scratch half way out of the gateway

You know that bit that you can never reach!!    We closed the gate when he moved back a little.

A grey highland, never seen one this colour before.

Stonechat, yes I know it is small, just a little way away!!

Common lizard basking in the sun

Lovely little creature

Today we have snow again on the mountains, lovely in the sun but the wind is freezing

Brrrr at least it has stayed dry even though not feeling like May.

Will put up a few more later

  • Great to see the robin enjoying his waxworm treats; you need a shallower dish or he'll be on bottoms up thread lol !!

post edit:  forgot to ask Wendy,  how did you get on last year raising Waxworms as I seemed to have missed the outcome.    Think Jim tried too but not sure he had success.

  • Found him a shallower dish today aitch, an old glass ashtray recycled into good use!
Waxworms only partially successful, they did pupate & moths emerged but never witnessed any mating nor found any eggs so I abandoned the experiment ... there was a successful mealworm farm at local nature reserve last year but required large containers & lots of space ... Reuben the hand-feeding Robin there thought it was a grand idea & raised money for reserve too as visitors donated to get a few each time to tempt him!

  • Sounds like a great idea your local nature reserve had - maybe Leighton Moss should start a robin hand feeding experience where visitors can buy a few mealies or waxworms from them ! Think they did consider having live mealworms to sell again so will check if they've made any decisions next week when I revisit.     Seems like I have a GT hopping up and down outside the window telling me the mealie dish needs topping up  LOL       gotta gooooo ............................   !!

  • Thanks Wendy, like the slo-mo captures, though the china pot will be tipping over soon with the aerobatics little Robin is doing!!!

    Lot to learn

  • Brilliant Wendy, loved the way he got in the dish with the waxworm, and went back for the one that he had left. Had a Starling in the shed with Titch today, I opened back door and of course Starling panicked and flew up against the window, landed on table top, looked at Titch who calmly took a mealworm and flew out of door quickly followed by Starling!!!
Don't worry about using this thread Wendy, the more the merrier:-)

    Lot to learn

  • Fabulous photos Gaynor, I'm guessing the mountains are the Carneddau (or possibly the Glyders), which I know did have a dusting of snow early May.

    I love Highland cattle.

  • Thanks Mike, yes the mountains are Snowdonia and tonight they are looking lovely with a shade of pink in the haze, just one small patch of snow in a crevice I suppose that will disappear with the coming good days we are promised.
