Two bird reserves to be recommended in France.
1) The Bay de la Somme and the 'Parc Ornithologique de Marquenterre'. Within an hours drive from Calais, the bay itself is very interesting from both sides: St Valery and Le Crotoy. At low tide,especialy at Le Crotoy one can walk right out onto the flats, but this is recommended only for those who know the area, otherwise with a local guide. Many types of waders can be seen. Just north of the bay is Marquenterre, a very well managed bird reserve. There are three footpaths through the reserve, of 2, 4 and 6 Kms. The shorter ones only take one to several marshy areas and lakes where many wildfowl can be seen, there are 12 hides along the route which are excellent: but, however powerful your lenses are you always need something more! The longer walk takes one closer to the shoreline where waders will be found. The paths are good but can get a bit muddy in places, so good footware is advisable.

Just outside St Valery is the 'Maison des Oiseaux', this is a museum showing many of the birds seen locally, as taxidermy specimens, whatever one thinks of this idea (I have reservations about it myself) the displays are magnificent, showing the birds in their natural habitat, though in unlikely groupings. They do however give a good, closeup view of each species and the novice, especially, can get an appreciation of the difference in sizes.
Outside the building is a small area with lake housing a variety of wildfowl which are fairly tame and can be seen in close-up with the naked eye.
2) Further south, on the bay of Arcachon, south of Bordeauw, is the 'Parc Ornithologique du Teich' . This is very much like 'Slimbridge' with a good visitor reception and paths that cater for the general tourist as well as dedicated birders, of course with hides suitably located. A small group of storks are resident close to the entrance. This area is a focus point for migations, north in spring and south in autumn, especially for common cranes.

I've been to the Teich a couple of times, though sadly not at the best time of year. It's a great reserve, we had ace views of Bluethroat, Melodious Warbler and Whiskered Tern plus many other spp. It is like Slimbridge in some respects (many hides!) but unlike Slimbridge does not have a collection of captive birds.

Hi
Ponts D'Ouves- the reserve near the Normandy beaches ;
Visited during August a while back and had great views of Spotted Crake, Great White Egret and Savi's Warbler. Nearby were Black Tern, Montagu's Harrier, Crested Tit and Fan tailed Cisticola.
