Dear all,
We would like to announce you that a new ornithological tourism center has been opened in Port de Pollença, Mallorca. This center is located next to a small wetland called la Gola, wich has been recently restored by the Department of the Environment, Department of Tourism of the Balearic Government, and the Pollença Council . In the center you can visit an exhibition about the most important places for birdwatching and walking on the marked paths around the wetland. With this center we want to give new impetus to the ornithological tourism in the Balearic Islands, and offer to people the best information about the most interesting areas for birds, where to see certain species, which are the most appropriate season, etc.So we contact you to spread this new and to attend your answers or suggestions. For more information please contact us through this email info@lagola.info, and visit our blog http://blog.lagola.info. Thank you very much for your attention, Cristina Fiol

Hi Cristina
Thank you for your information.
A place worth considering in the near future. We will keep your e-mail information. Can we visit Mallorca in a day from Menorca - is that feasible?
Dave and I tend to go to Menorca for 2 weeks in May each year and that is the point we do our birding too. We have been doing this since 2005 now. We are going next year 2011 too.
The big highlight is seeing the Bee-eaters close to Ses Selines.
Our holiday is more for the dinghy sailing aspect but we like to go birding too. There is nothing like sailing out of the bay at Ses Selines/Fornells, and watching the sea birds further out to sea.
Brilliant fun!!!!
Regards
Kathy and Dave
hi Kathy and Dave!
Thanks a lot for your answer.
If you want I can give you a contact of Menorca ornithologists, if you have not already.Or I can recommend you the best places to see bee-eaters and other species that interest you.
I don't know much about sailing but if you have a chance you could take a few days to sail around Mallorca and Cabrera National Park, in the South of Mallorca. In Cabrera, asking for permissions, you can stay one or two nights in its bay. It's a very nice place, I think you would love it.
Keep in toach,
regards,
Cristina.
Thank you for your reply
Please do that as you have mentioned as all information is relevant to us. We have certain things that we know but we want to know more about to our area. So if you cover the same ground no worries there at all.
We will have restrictions about our sailing as we are being looked after by a group of people and we cannot sail their boats out of bounds to their area. It is more to do with a health and safely issue going on. We can only sail in the Ses Salines Bay.
We are familar with s'Albufera National Parc and in 2009, we have taken a morning walking about the area so that is good for wildlife. The only thing is that the s'Albufera National Parc has changed their visiting times to April and September only - so May-time is out. So disappointing but we may come for bird watching yet without the sailing so your area sounds ideal for that reason alone
We will have to opt for an alternative form of transport and a hotel reservation or two for your associated outings
Please keep us up to date here with all the up to date activities going on in your area and I will look forward to hearing more from yourself on this site.

Hi Claire,
we will be very pleasant to attend you.
See you soon.
Dear Kathy and Dave,
I'm really sorry if it's too late but here are your information about bee-eaters in Menorca.
Best months for its migration observation are April-May and September. This specie also breeds in Menorca so, being very careful, you can watch them in their breeding colony all spring.
Best places: La Vall (Ciutadella), es pla de Mar (Ferreries), Cala Tirant and Son Saura Nord ( Es Mercadal), Camí de Tramuntana ( in the way from Mercadal to Fornells).
This is the mail of one ornithologist from Menorca, Xavier Mendez who also guides birdwatchers.

If you are interested in more information or in a birdwatch guide don't hesitate to write him.
I hope this information will be useful for you.
Best wishes,
Kathy / Dave. I would also recommend La Vall for beeeater and lots of other birds. Also don't forget Monte Toro - a bit touristy but the passing birds are well worth watching out for.

Hi Bob
Thank you for your answer Bob - we have never heard of La Vall/Monte Toro so it is another interesting place to find out about.
Will look into the place you have mentioned on here as we would life to go bird watching in Spain for an extra week when we can in the future
Kathy / Dave
La Vall is the small beach and its surrounds north east of cutiadella. Monte Toro is the hill in the centre of Menorca with the monastery and statue on it. Whilst the tourists go in the monastery sit on the wall and watch out for eagles, vultures and kites and also small birds in the scrub. In the cafe sit near the window and a lot will pass by.
Hello,
