Hi Folks
Just returned from a short break down in the Sout West of France-Landes, Messanges in Gascony. A 15 hour drive but well worth the discomfort.
What a place, set in a pine forest alongside the high dunes of the Atlantic, 35km from the Spanish border.
Sneaked the fied glasses in just in case i got a spare a hour away from the kids. Woke on the first morning to the sound of Greenwoodpeckers 'Yaffling' away and to our surprise there they were no more than 10 feet away in the front garden digging for food. Awesome. Breakfast was made and laid out on the table on our decking only to have Chaffinches, Great Tits and House Sparrows visit us for any scraps, again no more than 10 feet away.
Over the course of the next few days we were regularly visited by Red Squirrels and Rabbits, all so close it was unbelievable. (Piccies were actually taken on my mobile phone). A short walk out and and about produced great views of Black Kites, Short Toed Treecreepers, Black Redstarts, Hoopoes and Wrynecks.
Highly recommended, already looking forward to next year and a trip into the Pyreneese, to see what that will produce.
