Hi Everyone,
I am pretty new to photography and currently have a 55mm - 200mm Nikon lens. The one I am interested in buying is the 120mm - 400mm Sigma lens. The reviews read really well but as my main subject is birds I wondered if anyone here has this lens and any bird pic examples that they took with it?
Bit of a long shot I know but I'd really appreciate any responses,
Thank you,
Heather
Heather, I haven't got it but I have seen a few people using this lens and they have said that they are happy with it. I use a 70 300 Sigma and the 120 400 is likely to be my next step. The other advantage is that it will take a Teleconverter while mine won't.

Found a Flickr album with lots of wildlife pics taken with the 120-400mm Sigma (but on a Canon body): http://www.flickr.com/photos/tmat/

Thank you for your advice Bob and Aiki.
I'll have a look at that album now :)
I havent used that lens but have used the 150-500 which I found to be a nice lens in terms of picture quality. Have you thought about the 150-500? It's approx 80 pounds more than the 120-400 but when it comes to birds you can never have enough focal length - in my experience anyway.
I guess the lens will weigh a bit more but I would also consider it if you're thinking about the 120-400.

Thanks for your advice everyone.
After a lot of consideration I decided to take the plunge and buy the 120 - 400mm, I was very lucky and managed to get a good second hand one at just over £400!
Hopefully I'll have lots of pics to post soon.
Thanks again,
Heather,
Good luck with the lens and looking forward to seeing your pics!
You got an absolute bargain there! In my experience (Which isn't an awful lot) the longer focal length telephoto lenses don't lose very much value and in some cases don'y depreciate at all!

Hi Heather,
I borrowed this lens for a safari holiday a couple of years ago and thought it performed pretty well. You can see some of the results here.
Most of my other bird shots are with a Nikon 300mm f2.8 and a 1.4x teleconvertor, a bit heavier but slightly sharper results in my opinion.
Happy snapping!
