The Alley is starting to slow down...

Well, a little bit anyway.  Mind you, it's been a busy time over the last few weeks, down along Digger Alley.  New species have turned up - this one's a Bear Clawed Nomad Bee no less!

and the ever popular Pointy Bum Bee has been a regular visitor

There's been sex....

and death

Those ants are excellent at clearing away anything littering the path!  Everyone gets their own back when the ants start flying however

With these guys hawking up and down the path, snatching the ants from mid-air

Green Eyed Flower Bees are still busy - if a little worn.  They have had a good year, we've had lots whizzing around us

Beewolves are still hunting

Jewel wasps are still glittering

and Sand Wasps are still hunting down their enormous caterpillar prey - amazing they can shift something that big!

You do need to keep your eyes peeled though - you never know who's sneaking up behind you....

  • Still a good selection of mini beasties, there. I particularly like the first two bees. Despite the warmth this weekend, insect numbers and types have definitely gone down up here.

I know what you mean. I once watched a parasitic wasp paralyze a spider four times its size and then drag it eight feet up the bungalow wall to hide it in the rafters and, all the while, the spiders feet kept catching on the rendering (all 8 of them!), so the wasp had to manoeuvre around the problem.

  • The Hawker has to be my favourite, the close up showing off it's fabulous colours but the jewelled wasp comes a very close second with it's dazzling outfit.

    Lot to learn

  • My goodness, I have clearly been wandering around with my eyes shut. I don't think I've seen any of your amazing creatures. Beautiful photos!

They are surprisingly easy to miss - even though Digger Alley is so named because it's the path to the beach.  It's one of the reasons Mrs WJ & I spend so much time there during the summer, pointing them out to people.  They're endlessly fascinating :-)
