Minsmere and Havergate Island in Suffolk now have birds affected by Bird Flu. Disappointed relievedDisappointed relieved As usual nothing mentioned on the RSPB website and nothing from any of the staff from Minsmere in there blogs but from elsewhere first as seems to happen now!

Regards,

Ian.

  • Not surprised. There were cases there last year and it was inevitable that it would turn up again.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • The headline isn't very helpful though - lower in the article it says:-

"Over the winter there were some confirmed cases at Minsmere RSPB, while there were also suspected cases at Havergate Island in 2023.

At the present time, however, both sites have said that they have had no confirmed cases"

    So not really anything new.

  • We did regularly mention the impacts of bird flu in our blogs during last year when it first hit, and again early in the breeding season when it was most prevalent. There are no current suspected cases of bird flu at Minsmere, though we will not be surprised to find new cases either over the winter or next spring, as it is highly likely that the impacts of bird flu will continue to be felt for several years yet, and we remain concerned about the long term impacts on populations of many birds.
