Fowlmere volunteers help with repairs to the sea defences on 9th February.

A group of volunteers from RSPB Fowlmere helped with repairs to bunds damaged in the December storm surge, along with a few colleagues from Sandy. Shocking to see how much damage caused by the 5th Dec. surge. The main task was to cover the re-profiled sea wall with heavy wire netting. Guinea pigs for the task, we quickly figured out it was easier to roll than carry the nets ! Hard work, not helped by the wet coastal mud. After a wet start, the weather improved and in the event we managed to secure nets to a 50-metre section, about one-third of the whole job. We hope subsequent work parties have completed the work. With luck the new profile should allow any surge water to overflow without damaging the bund. Lets hope it works. A good day out; glad to help out at Havergate. Many thanks to Suffolk & Sandy RSPB staff for making arrangements - from Graham, Richard (x2), Mike (x2) & David. Perhaps we can arrange a follow-up visit to see our handy work later in the year ?
