• Volunteer Week #2: Marie - Family Activities Volunteer

In the second of our posts looking at the important role volunteers play here at Frampton Marsh, we'd like to introduce Marie. During the May half-term and summer holidays Marie helps run our very popular pond dipping sessions for families.

    ---------------------------------------------------

About a year ago, I told some of the staff at Frampton Marsh that I rescue frogs, toads and newts that have fallen into the…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 27 May - 2 June 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome back to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

And well, we've had some excitement here on the reserve over the past week. So it is time to dial the time machine in, and zoom back to last weekend for the maps.

Well, that all looks pretty reasonable. Why the fuss? Hang on a sec....

Yes, that is a common crane flying right over the reserve…

  • Volunteer Week #1: Karl - Centre volunteer

    Hi there!

This week (1-7 June) it is National Volunteers' Week. Through this period we'll be taking a look at some of the hard-working people who help out around Frampton Marsh as part of our dedicated volunteer team. Who are they, what do they do, what makes them give up their time?

We will start with Karl, one of our centre volunteers. Karl's role is to welcome people onto the reserve and make sure they have…

  • George's Thoughts #4

Here is the latest blog post from our visitor experience intern, George:

    --------------------------------------------------------

It feels a lot like summer now. Temperatures are soaring and lots of events are happening, such as bug hunting and pond dipping. I’ve also put out the new migration treasure trail which the kids are now enjoying, especially when there are promises of chocolate as a prize!

    On May 24…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 20th - 26th May 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

And in true tabloid style, phew what a scorcher! As I write this the sun is beating down outside and the temperature is in the mid 20's. Sometimes extra hot weather seems to reduce the amount of sightings. But not a bit of it this week. But to start, we will dial the time machine back to last weekend....

    A trial …

  • Family fun for half-term!

There are lots of fun filled events for all your family this half-term week at RSPB Frampton Marsh.

Back by popular demand is a treasure trail round our beautiful reedbed. Follow the clues round our trail, get the questions right and you’ll win a prize! This runs throughout the holiday, from 26 May to 4 June. The trail is £2.75 per child and is suitable for those aged 5 - 15.

On Wednesday 31 May and Friday…

  • George's Thoughts #3: Turtles, mud and electronics

George, our visitor experience intern, is back again with some more musings on life at Frampton Marsh...

    -------------------------------

I can’t believe it’s only been one month since I’ve started here. May has arrived, and the days are flying by. I wake up each morning to the occasional sound of the cuckoo outside my bedroom, which is a nice wake up call. Every time I walk down through the hedgerow path, I hear the…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 13th - 19th May 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to this week's recent sightings blog post. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Well, its all a bit wet out there today, but the weekend doesn't look too bad. So should you come birdwatching with us? Of course you should! Here is what has been about over the past week.

Well, last Saturday was a stonkingly good day. We ran out of space on the sightings board! Just have a look at this:

  • RSPB wash boat cruise 18th May

Hi there everyone, Anthony here, assistant warden and RSPB Frampton Marsh and RSPB Freiston Shore.

It's that time of year and the wash boat cruises are up and sailing again, the first cruise of the year ventured out into the wash and between the wet and miserable days of Wednesday and Friday the sun shined beautifully for our cruise on Thursday. Before we'd even set off the group we're treated to some lovely views of…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 6th - 12th May 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back once again to the Frampton Marsh weekly sightings blog. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

Got some great news this week. But first, we will crank the time machine dial back to last weekend.

You may remember in last week's edition of the news I mentioned how the single day record for the site had been broken? Well, the new record lasted all of a week. Our summer assistant warden Anthony rose to…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 29th April - 5th May 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to another edition of the Frampton Marsh sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

If you have read the blog earlier in the week you will know that Saturday was a record breaking day on the reserve. So we will start there with the sightings maps.

102 species were seen on the day on the RSPB reserve, with another two down by the river mouth. Stonking stuff!

    The spoonbill was rather nice…

  • George's Thoughts #2: Stayin' Alive

Here is George again, with an update on what he has been doing:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

At the beginning of the last week of April, while taking the wooden cairn down to the bottom car park, I was enveloped by a group of low-flying swallows; an absolutely amazing moment! I’ve never been so close to one before, let alone a whole flock. I guess they were hunting for insects close…

  • Guest Blog - A record breaking day at Frampton

On Saturday 29 April, local Lincolnshire birders Dave Roberts and Ben Ward decided to have a crack at a three figure birding day at Frampton Marsh. Dave has kindly written up the day and allowed us to share it with you. Hopefully it will inspire a few more of our visitors to try and join the 'TonClub'. I know I'm thinking about it now.

    Over to you Dave....

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 22nd - 28th April 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome back to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

Well, been a bit of a mixed week, weather wise, hasn't it? Almost wintry in parts, rather sunny in others. Though still quite chill. That has made a difference to the birds, with many summer migrants still to arrive in numbers. And even the reappearance of some winter visitors we'd thought were long…

  • Back once again...

Another week, another welcome blog. Though this is more like a 'welcome back' blog. Anthony was with us two years ago as the conservation intern. He now makes a triumphant (!) return, after an extended holiday in the USA, to be a contract assistant warden, working at the reserves over the summer. Time for him to have his say...

Hi there readers, well I am…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 15th - 21st April 2017

Well, I promised you last time to try to get more photos into this week's blog. So here's swan to get you started...

Yes, it seems the mute swans are back to nesting again. Do remember to give them a wide margin if you see them nesting, as they can be quite defensive of their nests and young…

  • George's thoughts

In the start of regular weekly blogs from George, our Visitor Experience Intern, here he muses about his first couple of weeks at the reserve:

    -------------------------------

These past few weeks at Frampton Marsh have been a little hectic, especially with the Easter holidays, but I have settled in now and very much enjoying it. Everybody I have met is friendly, knowledgeable and a great laugh. Why just yesterday we…

  • Farewell, but not forever?

Over the past couple of weeks we have had blogs by Poppy. She is now back off to university, but left us with one final blog. Here she reflects on her time with us.

    -----------------------------------------

Today is the last day of my work placement here at Frampton. It is amazing how quickly this past month has flown by. I am not even sure I want to leave! It won’t be for long, I can assure you of that. So in order…
  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 8th - 14th April 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to another tranche of Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

OK, this will be a quick one because it is already seven in the evening, and I want to go home after a long (but fun) day dealing with all the Easter egg hunters.

    So, straight onto the maps.

The Med gull was being really very showy today

Yes, you did read that right. We did have a waxwing. Which I missed…

  • I, said the sparrow...

Continuing our guest blogs, here is Poppy again with some thoughts about what she got up to last weekend:

    --------------------------------------------

    Hello, hellooo! Poppy here again.

Whilst back from Uni, I thought I’d take the opportunity to visit the Boston Wildlife Explorers group. Being away from home, I’ve not had the chance to attend as regularly as I’d like. But it was lovely to be back at Freiston Shore.…

  • Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore recent sightings: 1st - 7th April 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Gosh, the weather seems to have gone a bit nice. April showers are somewhat lacking of late. I'm sure that will change now I have tempted Fate though! So, what has been about? Let the maps commence...

As you can see, the summer migrants are definitely coming in with swallows, sedge warblers and…

  • Hello, hello, hello!

Gosh, it is all change here at RSPB Frampton Marsh. Let me introduce George, our new visitor experience intern. George will be with us for the next six months, helping me with all the visitor activities. So, over to him to tell you a bit about himself.

    ---------------------------------------------

Hello! My name is George Woodford and I am the new intern at Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire. I first began volunteering…

  • Egg-streme Fun Ahead

Poppy is back with another blog, let's see what she has to say....

    -------------------------------

After being here a week already and working mainly in the Visitor Centre and office, I practically leapt at the chance to have a walk around the reserve today. But there was a slight catch. It was not just a leisurely stroll for me. I had to do some preparation for a very popular event at Frampton. I’ll give you some…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 25th - 31st March 2017

Howdy folks! Welcome back to the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

With the weather getting warmer it really does feel like Spring has sprung. And yet there are still some winter migrants hanging on in there. Time for the maps, and a look of what is about.

Oooh, a drake garganey! We had one a couple of weeks ago, so not sure if this is the same one or a new one. It is typically elusive…

  • Hello, hello!

After last week's welcome blog from Nelly, this week we have another new face to introduce. Poppy will be with us over the next month as part of a placement from Bishop Grosseteste University. Let's see what she has to say...

    --------------------------------------

Hi guys! I am Poppy. I have just started a work placement at Frampton, so you may see me around the reserve over the next month (Lucky you!) as I…
