• Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore recent sightings: 18th - 24th March 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome back to the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

What do you mean "who?". Yes, yes, I know it has been a while since the last of these. I have been off on leave again. Hey, it was my birthday, give a guy a break! Anyway, I am back now and normal service should be resumed from here on in.

So, let's not muck about, what's about? Cue the maps....

  • And it is "Здравейте" from her...

There is a new face to be seen on the reserve. Nelly has joined us for 6 months as a conservation intern. Here are a few words from her:

    ------------------------------------------

Hello everyone! My name is Nelly and I’m Frampton’s new conservation intern. You will see me around the reserve in the next six months. Afterwards, I’m continuing my internship at Minsmere for another six months. This residential RSPB internship…

  • Frampton Marsh (and beyond) recent sightings: 11 - 17 February 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome to another week of Frampton Marsh sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

(And a special 'howdy' for the nice lady from the Derby local group who greeted me with a "Howdy Chris the visitor guy" last weekend. So nice to meet people who like these blogs)

So, what do we have for you this week? Well, in a complete break from tradition, how about some birds that aren't even on…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 4 - 10 February 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome back to another batch of weekly sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Um, I'm afraid it might be a bit of a short one this week. Lots of birds on the reserve. Thousands of golden plover, lapwings, wigeons.... But not anything particularly rare. All about quantity and spectacle at the moment. We haven't had that many visitors either, which always limits the amount of things being reported…

  • Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore recent sightings: 7th January - 3rd February

Howdy folks! And welcome to a triple length bumper edition of the sightings blog. Yes, yes, I know. You've been wondering where it went. Well, with a combination of annual leave and being ill, I've not been about much for the past last three weeks and so couldn't produce one. I hope you'll forgive me.

So, what do we have for you? Other than a lot of maps. Though if it is ok with everyone, I will only…

  • New Faces

Well, one new face and one that has been around for a couple of months, but I forgot to post her intro. (Oops, sorry Molly!)

We currently have two residential volunteers here at Frampton Marsh, helping out the busy team with all the winter work. They normally will be helping the wardens, but will sometimes lend a hand down at the visitor centre too. Who are they? Well, best if I let them introduce themselves....

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 1 - 6 January 2017

Howdy folks! And welcome to a new year's worth of Frampton Marsh sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy. I hope you all enjoyed your festive breaks, and maybe even found some time to get some birdwatching done.

So, what have we had about on the reserve? In time-honoured fashion, lets go to the maps.

Sorry, no maps for Wednesday or Tuesday

    And finally...

So do you get the general idea?

    Hen harriers…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 17 - 23 December 2016

Seasons greetings! Yes, it is a festive edition of the Frampton Marsh sightings. With me, Chris the Visitor Guy.

I'm afraid it is another short one, as I can hear the mince pies calling my name. So lets get right down to it, with some maps.

A couple of full days there, as you can see. This does appear to be the last time the scaup was seen. So either it is hiding, or it has moved on. Lots of confusion with young…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 10 - 16 December 2016

Howdy folks! Welcome again to the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Its another fairly short this one this week, with a bit of a map gap in the middle. But hopefully it'll give you some ideas of what is out here. Shall we start with today?

The water rails are becoming ever more obvious. We are sure at least one pair bred on the reserve this year, maybe more. The young birds are now…

So, lets have a look at some daily maps...

    There's a little…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 19 - 25 November 2016

Howdy folks! It is me, Chris the visitor guy. Back by popular demand with the Frampton Marsh recent sightings, after being elsewhere on Fridays for the last couple of weeks.

Wait, what is that? There was no popular demand? Well tough, you've still got me!

Anyway, a big thanks for Toby for coming back and doing the sightings over the last couple of weeks. I'm afraid my return is going to be a bit of an anticlimax…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 29 October - 4 November 2016

Howdy folks! And welcome back again to another set of Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Now, because you've all been good, I have got you some nice photos to look at this week too. Hurrah! We shall start with last Saturday's map though...

Wheee! That is just a few sightings. Some more confirmed than others. Neither the shrike nor the buzzard could be refound for confirmation…

  • Halloween horror?

It being Halloween, I thought I'd take the opportunity to talk about something spooky spotted on the reserve over the weekend. A slime mould.

What is a slime mould? Sounds a bit yucky, maybe something fungal... Well at one point in time they were classified as fungi, but these day they are considered to be quite different, quite unlike anything else.. They also have behaviour that would be right at home in a horror…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 22-28 October 2016

Howdy folks! Welcome once again to the Frampton Marsh recent sightings blog post. With me, Chris the visitor guy!

Strap yourself in folks, we actually have a few photos of birds this week. But lets start with today's map...

Yes, the dowitcher is still with us. Sometimes a little hard to see, mostly because it has got so close! If you've not yet been to see this American bird, it is a great chance to do so.…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 15 - 21 October 2016

    Howdy folks!

Welcome to another edition of the Frampton marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Right, we'll start with today. Then what we're gonna do is go back. Way back. Back into time...  (Name that tune)

Yes, the dowitcher is still with us. And proving just as elusive as ever. Today it was seen twice in pretty much the same place. Once at 8 am, once at 3 pm. Where does it go in the meantime…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 8 - 14 October 2016

Howdy folks! And welcome to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

So, what do we have in store for you this week?

Well, as you may remember last week we finished on saying we needed a bigger sightings sheet (with a meme from a certain film about a shark). Well, it continued in much the same vein...

Yes, the dowitcher was still with us, and I even got to see it! Plus…

  • Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore recent sightings: 1 - 7 October 2016

Howdy folks, and welcome to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris, the visitor guy.

So, its a bumper excitement packed edition this week. Strap yourself in, and we'll start with last weekend...

Yes, that is a long-billed dowitcher that is taking pride of place on the board. A rare American wader that looks a bit like a snipe-sized godwit. But don't take my word for it. Check out…

  • **STOP PRESS** Reserve First at Frampton

A Long-billed Dowitcher gave us the run around today after being picked up in flight and lost to view when it landed. A Sparrowhawk on East Hide roof didn't help and it was flushed from the scrape and not picked up for several hours. Luckily it was re-found and enjoyed by everyone just before the drizzle set in.

If you're not sure what one looks like, here are some pictures of the bird seen today by Paul and…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 24 - 30 September 2016

Howdy folks! And welcome to the Frampton marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Right, no messing about this week. Lets get right on it.

The marsh sandpiper is pretty much confirmed now (though we are still waiting for it to be officially accepted). That would make the number of waders seen on the reserves since April to be 33. Tied with last year. And no red-necked phalarope or woodcock…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 17 - 23 September 2016

Howdy folks! Welcome to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

So, some really big tides earlier in the week brought in a lot of waders. And quite a few birdwatchers too. But we'll get to that in a minute.

As you may remember, last time I set a challenge for someone to try to take a photograph of a kingfisher, sat on the 'kingfisher perch' in front of the visitor…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 10 - 16 September 2016

Howdy folks! And welcome to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightins. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

So what do we have in store for you this time?

Well, for starters a few less maps than usual. With the departure of Sarah my intern, my days off are being covered by other members of the Frampton team, and I need to persuade them to start sending me photos of the sightings board. So apologies for the lack…

  • Frampton Marsh recent sightings: 3 - 9 September 2016

Howdy folks! And welcome to another edition of the Frampton Marsh recent sightings. With me, Chris the visitor guy.

Well, the quantity of curlew sandpipers might have eased off a bit, but they are still here in good numbers. Other waders too. What, we're an East coast wetlands site, in autumn. That was a surprise? Anyway, let's go look at some maps...

Don't be misled by the simplicity of the map. There are…
