Has anyone here installed one?
I would quite like to have a pond, but I don't really want one in the garden as such. We have a septic tank which soaks away through one of our bits of woodland, then through a field and, eventually, to a burn about 100 yards away. There's a very boggy (and slightly smelly) bit where the soakaway crosses the floor of the wood.
I have been wondering about putting a reed bed at the top of the soakaway, and encouraging the establishment of a pond below it. So far, it's only wondering. I've no idea if the grey water would be any good for wildlife, although I kind of assume it would, and I've no idea if the reed bed would clean up the run off enough that the pond would be bearable to visit.
When I look at the urban situations some of you are putting ponds in, it makes me feel a bit selfish that I don't have one; and I guess I could just create one in the woodland somewhere, without bothering the soakaway. Any guidance?

I was only talking to a friend a couple of days ago about reed beds. Both of us need to replace our sceptic tanks and the reed bed system is one he is considering. We don’t have enough room for this system so I haven’t looked into it, but he found all the information on the web. He needs it to look after a large hotel so the water that comes out of the other end must be OK or it would never be approved.
I think you would be better off building your pond out of the woodland otherwise you will have a problem with leaves contaminating the water.
Build it and they will come.
Hmmm... the latter is a good point. The garden is quite heavily tree'd already (there are some photos on my page). I wonder if I might be better just not doing this?
That burn is pretty close. It's not like we're SHORT of water round here
bog loveing plants might grow well there and add greanery and flowers some are ok in shade too

THis weekend, we are hoping to put some plants in a large pond we inherited. We hope to plant some reed in a shallow shelf. Is this likely to work? Should we prepare the ground?
The pond was created about 18 months to two years ago, but is devoid of plant life, hence our decision to add some. We have a mixture of pond plants, marginals and bog plants.
Could I ask a wee bit more advice please? I'm thinking of going ahead with reed plugs anyway, withoutt he pond bit. How do you PLANT reeds in sopping mud, does anyone know?
Philip, how did you get on?
anyone? There's some suggestion that you just, kinda, plug them in and hope for the best?
