Alkincoates NR, Colne, Lancashire

Had the opportunity to spend yesterday afternoon there (thank goodness we didn't have today's weather!!). It is a small mixed woodland with a couple of small ponds, a running stream and a few feeding stations.

Saw bullfinches, chaffinches, goldfinches & greenfinches; great, blue, coal and long tailed tits, crows, magpies and (heard but did not see) jays. There were also blackbirds, robins, dunnock, thrushes and starlings about as well as a few grey squirrels. My biggest surprise though was seeing some reed buntings! Not because they are uncommon, but because of the location! I know that there are many reservoirs / lakes in the surrounding area, but still didn't expect to find them in a woodland setting! Took a few photos as ever although it was a bit dark under the trees!! Only those at the tops were drenched in sunshine!

A magpie

A dunnock checking out the spill from the feeding station

A male bullfinch on one of the tables

and another watching from the surrounding trees

A blackbird

A watchful grey squirrel (enjoying the sun I think!)!

A wary crow

A starling singing his heart out as the sun was going down

and the reed buntings!

It's quite a small reserve but with plenty to see!
