Bird ids

Hello all, I saw these two birds on a walk earlier today. Unfortunately it was rather gloomy at the time and I was on the wrong side of what light there was.

Could this be a whitethroat?

Could this be a youngster? There were stonechats, meadow pipits and skylarks and in the area.

  • Hi DB, wait for other more expert opinions but I would say yes to common Whitethroat for the first two photos and perhaps a juvenile Stonechat for the 3rd and 4th photos.

Thanks Hazel. That's brilliant. Haven't seen either before!
  • At least give people a chance with the pictures. I use Photoshop but google 'adjust photo brightness contrast' and one of the free programs should be able to do the job. So yes to whitethroat but I wouldn't be sure about the juvenile. I'm not sure how large the image below will appear, it seems tiny in the preview, but you get the idea; all the information's in the picture already, you just need to adjust it to make it visible.

  • In reply to Tom Ash:

Thank you. That's very helpful. It did not occur to me to edit the photos.

I had a go and made this, which does make the details clearer. I expect it can be made much better than this.

    Will try this in future.
