I have been abandoned!!

I have had so many starlings and sparrows around lately that have been eating all the fat balls I put out.I thought I would take the fat balls away and see if the birds would use any of my other feeders. They are hanging in the same positions as the fat ball feeders and I thought I might 'trick' them into trying something different.

I had thought that with so many birds around they would have a go,but no!!

I have hardly seen a bird  except one that landed on a feeder saw it was only peanuts and flew off!

I also want to move the feeders around a bit as I do not want the mess to build up underneath.

I feel so bereft at the moment I think I will go out now and put the fat ball feeder back!

It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.

  • Just try mixed seed in your feeders or sunflower hearts, sparrows don't seem to like nuts and this time of year is a bad time to feed nuts as chicks can choke on them. Starlings tend to like the fat balls and don't seem to be great seed eaters, well not in my garden, they prefer scones and pastry.

Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain.

  • Hiya,

I've got some starlings who visit my seed feeders, and the babies have now started trying to copy their mums - although they're not very good at it yet!

If you look at my post 'Starling mum and baby' there's a photo of a mum on one of my feeders.  I use the chopped seed with insects which they seem to enjoy, and have adapted the feeder with two thin sticks which are much longer than the plastic ones provided with the feeder, so that it's easier for bigger birds to hold on.  I've had a thrush try to use it too - not very successfully though!
