Can I feed dried chickpeas if I soak them overnight?
I'm a wanderer.
Apparently chickpeas and any beans have to be fully cooked as uncooked beans, even if soaked overnight, contain hemagglutinin which is toxic to birds
Thanks Adam, I'll cook them like I do for human consumption! Hope the birds like them as much as I do!
I would be surprised if any garden birds recognised chickpeas as a food source. Ducks on a local pond maybe would though?
The starlings like them, and a blue tit has had a go!
Great news! (and good to know)
Interesting and thanks for the update. What are you putting the soaked chickpeas into for the birds to then take them? A photo with the birds eating them wood be good, so it can be used as reference for others in future.
Thank you so much.
I've stopped putting them out because despite being soaked overnight and then cooked for two hours, they still dry out and become rock hard. I was afraid the starlings would choke on them. From now on they're solely for human consumption. I love them!
