Unusual hoverfly

Hi

My partner and I visited over Spring Bank Holiday. Had an amazing time and saw some new stuff to us. For me one of the most exciting things was spotting a very localised hover fly that doesn't seem to have been recorded at the site before (at least not on NBN or GBIF). I was wondering if someone can confirm if it is a new sighting for the reserve. It is a very convincing bee mimic so it is possible that people have overlooked it as a bumblebee in the past

.Criorhina floccosa

She's called Criorhina floccosa and I was very happy to get this confirmed today by the UK Hoverfly Facebook group.,

  • An exciting find.
I only have access to a copy of our species lists as of 2017 at present, and she doesn't appear on that list. Two other species of Criorhina are on that list. I know lots of species have been added since, but I don't know if this is one. I will let our ecologists know and double check with them whether it's on the reserve list. A good example of why it's important to try to take a photo of any mystery species.
