Harrier heaven!

It might have been wet today but this was Fowlmere at its best - very few people, hides to ourselves and loads of wildlife. First off was a beautiful patch of Sweet Violets near the Drewer hide, where we sat and watched some Canada Geese get very territorial with each other. On to the Reedbed Hide where a Snipe landed to our right and promptly proved just how well camouflaged these birds can be by promptly disappearing. The wintering female Hen Harrier then appeared to our left and hunted over the reedbeds and over the pool in front of us - almost certainly the best view of a Hen Harrier I have ever had. She then sat in her favourite birch tree in the rain. On our way back a large bird of prey flew over the reeds. I thought it was the Hen Harrier but a quick look through the binoculars revealed a superb Marsh Harrier! A great day despite of (or because of) the rain.
  • It is good to know that there is still something to be seen at Fowlmere even when the weather is iffy. More on my blog post 'Wader Week'.

Just one small point for the purists - there are no birch trees at Fowlmere to my knowledge (but I am open to correction if anyone can point it out) - but a hen harrier is still a superb bird no matter what sort of tree it settles on.

  • Actually, Doug, I only put birch as someone had suggested it was a birch on the notice board in the Reedbed hide! No idea what tree it is to be honest! Forgot to say though, the Marsh Harrier was a superb male.
