I put up a new nest box last November and blue tits have been interested to the extent they carefully removed all the shredded paper (provided with the nest box) I had put in. Hubby has just installed a camera for me. The box floor now has poo in it, presumably from the blue tits who were spring cleaning and very likely roosting there some nights.
My question is, should I leave the poo, or would it be better to clean it out? I am worried about doing too much in case I frighten them away. You never know which beady eyes are watching when you get a ladder out!
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Sparrow how exciting, it's a pity you can't put videos up on the site when the chicks arrive and things get really busy in there.
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
My next purchase is a DVD recorder so I can download it all. The camera has a microphone, which is picking up all the chirruping from the garden, so my office sounds like an aviary at the moment! It even picked up my hubby filling the kettle in the kitchen for some unknown reason. Pity there isn't a bird inside - just poo!!!

I am really excited now - just got back from a walk and there is a bird in the box!!! It is underneath the camera pecking at something. I can only see his tail and the end of one wing. As it's dark now, the pictures are black and white, but I think it's a sparrow! It has been pecking for over 5 minutes to my knowledge and hasn't lifted his head. It can't be pecking the camera or I would be able to see him. I can watch him as I write, it's brilliant!!!!
That's brilliant Sparrow. Very appropriate if sparrows are the first birds to nest in your box with camera. We don't have sparrows in our garden but they nested in one of our blue tit boxes last year.
I have changed my mind and now think it's a blue tit. I can still only see the tail and a lot of magnified bum fluff, which I think is his head partly under a wing. He is asleep but had a good scratch and fell over! Sorry if I'm getting boring, but I am so excited about this. I think I will have to eat my tea in here and bring in a sleeping bag!!
I think the box is too low down for sparrows as it is just above the kitchen window about 3m up.
I still need to know if I should clean it out or not though. Does anyone know?
Hi Sparrow
Well done you! I hope that something actually starts nest building soon and you get some great video clips.
I wouldn't clean it out at the moment, probably best to wait and see what happens next.
Best wishes Chris

Hi Sparrow,
I'm getting excited for you! :-D I want to hear about every little detail when it happens!
Personally I'd leave it, especially if you've got a bird sleeping in there at night - they may well have claimed it as their own I presume they'll tidy it up.
I've my camera on all day every day since putting it up last week; nothing has happened but hearing the birds through the tv is weird in itself!
Thanks everyone. I'll leave it alone. As the bird is continuing to roost in the box there will be more mess anyway.
He is fast asleep now, all is quiet, but occasionally he over balances. It's a shame he is right up against the back wall of the box, underneth the camera fittings, so the lens only catches bits of him.
We have a holiday booked during April. I may have to cancel it!!!!!! Hubby would be delighted at that prospect!!!
