This box is in its third year. The first year we had two broods and last year three.
A male has been roosting in it all winter.
A snapshot taken yesterday: The male has been sitting on top advertising this des res for a week or so.There was a pair popping in and out yesterday and some token nesting material.
This morning they are sitting eyeballing each other and as soon as one moves the other pounces on it.
The shenanigans in the nest box continue. More straw was brought in by the male and the female spent the day clearing out the droppings leaving him perched on top chirping away. In the evening she went to bed early so that when he tried to get in his roosting box she was already there. She pinned him to the floor pecking away under one of his wings. I was just about to go out to tap on the box when he managed his escape. She spent the night there while he made a few plaintive attempts to regain his roost, finally giving up when it got dark.
This morning at six (still dark) the box was empty.
He has been in with more straw but no sign of her

Night, night, hope the bugs don't bite.
Cheers, Linda.

I'm retired have been for a quite few years now,( though illness) so I have lots of time for the birds, but I'm still leaning, I have a good husband who will make me all I need like nest boxes.
he helps me to make the food clean and fill the feeders, we go shoping I nearly always come back with something for the birds.
I like bees but wouldn't go as far as a hive. :-)
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!
My husband spent ages yesterday up a ladder in the freezing cold putting a camera in a box for me. He was blue when he came in, and suggested I take up chess for a hobby!

Don't you dare Sparrow!
Sparrow, I think your OH thinks you have reached 'check mate' with all your feeders and tables, or he thinks chess would be a cheaper hobby and less arduous for him.
LOL. I think "cheaper" and "less arduous for him" are the right expressions!!!!
Tell him it will keep him fit, lol

Well, there's been a great tit investigating the box today.
Oh dear! I hope there isn't a war about to break out!
Did anyone sleep in it last night? It was very cold with a hard frost here overnight.
Yes, he's been back in his roost unmolested. She probably couldn't put up with all his poo in it.
I read somewhere (was it here on this forum?) that if the roost is untidy with droppings it's occupied by a male and if it's clean it's a female. Why am I not surprised????
(I know that male sparrows are quite distinct but it's not easy to tell with blue tits till the breeding season)
The blue tit box is messy too :-(
