Sorry Pauwen, looks like we all missed your post at first, there is still time to put it up though!
Between 2 and 5 metres on a tree trunk facing north or east in my opinion. If it's for woodpeckers then fill it with soft wood as they make a point of excavating their own nest each year. Some balsa or a rotten birch log would be ideal for this purpose.
