Where to put nesting boxes

I was lucky to be given a couple of nesting boxes from a neighbour yesterday and I am wondering where is the best place to put them. I have a wooded area at the top of the garden which I believe would be ideal but has anyone got any further suggestions. Please bear in mind I'm not good with heights. Also can you nail houses to trees or would that harm the tree.
