We have had a nesting box for many years. Most years blue tits (or great tits) go thru the following routine. In Nov / Dec they return to the outside of the box and holding on to the hole tap or peck its edge. In very early spring they enter the box, Once entered the box will be used for nesting. We rarely see much nesting materials going in but are more aware when feeding the chicks begins as there is much toing and froing.
To our surprise 2 days after the snow melted here Jan 2013 a blue tit was seen to the box and this activity has been seen again since. Jan 26th seems very early. So we will try to watch in detail. Maybe we will spot nesting materials going into the box. Maybe pull up some moss and leave under the tree.
Hi Lucky, good luck with the nest box! Keep us posted
Cheers, Jason
Hi Lucky, that's brilliant! I hope your blue tits nest happily there for you :)
Nest prospecting and inspection will go on throughout the winter if the resident pair return, they'll be just scoping things out ready for when all of the action kicks off later in spring. If you have any pet fur or tumble drier fluff you can leave out then they might be interested in using it to line their nest when building is under way.
