Hi, since last Friday (24th January) I have been watching a pair of Blue Tits taking nesting materials into a bird box in my garden. It seems very early to me, what do you think? The bird box has been used over many years by Blue Tits to lay their eggs and raise their chicks.
Hi Nancy,.good luck with the bluetits, hope their young will survive!
Cheers, Jason
I have also got a pair of bluetits checking out a box and also attacking my shiny door handles!
Still very early though.
It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
Hello Nancy and welcome from me too. We have the same activity here in the garden and 8 out of 13 boxes have been checked out by pairs of Blue Tits; in fact, this morning one pair were in and out for quite a while, looking inside and out but not sure they are taking nesting material in yet. Last year we had 4 boxes occupied (we have put up another 6 boxes this year !) and although a Great Spotted Woodpecker drove three of the pairs away, we did have success with the box nearest our house after I shooed GSWoody away once. 10 nestlings went on to fledge so we are hoping for an even more promising 2013 nesting season as we are making great efforts to protect all boxes; we have put metal hole cover plates and are now looking at insect mesh to protect the outer surface of the boxes so watch this space !!!! Good luck with yours but hope they are not nesting too soon.

Thanks everyone :) I'll keep you posted on my 'Early Birds'
They may just be roosting in there and doing a bit of house keeping.
Hi Hazy, wow that is a lot of boxes!! You're like a birding housing association lol... Good luck with the boxes everyone!
LOL Jason, I've been looking for more nesting boxes in the sales !! we have so many mature trees, plenty of place to put them and the birds seem to want every one we put up :)
