Hello, I would really appreciate any advice on encouraging larger birds to nest in our garden. It is quite a large garden with three huge fir trees which we are considering cutting to about half the height for safety reasons. I thought that the top of the trees at their shorter height would make a good site for some larger next boxes or platforms. It is in a rural part of Cumbria and I know there are owls the hunt closeby and I think I have also seen kestrels. There are lots of jackdaws about too. There is also a large pond in the garden, which does not have fish in at the moment but when it did it used to attract herons and we are hoping they will come back when we stock it again next year. Does anyone think there is any hope we could get any of these birds to nest in the trees? If so any advice as to box/plaform design would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much.
Laurence

In a garden with large mature trees a tawny owl is perhaps the most likely of the species to take up residence, especially if you hear them calling in the area already. Barn owls usually nest in mature trees or outbuildings that are immediately adjacent open fields, little owls are similar in choice of nesting habitat often preferring isolated trees in hedges or farmland.
