Bluetits

We've also had a very sad tale about bluetits in nesting box and parents/or more single mum, either abandoned the chicks at 3 days old (or was eaten by next doors cat?)  Absolutely devastated!  We had all 9 eggs hatch successfully too.  We did have some rather strange behaviour by mum before she nested though...she'd been using the box to roost in, but kept ferociously attacking one side of the inside of the box, to the extent that she made a hole all the way through.  We patched it up from the outside with a piece of wood but then she started on that too!!??  This odd behaviour seemed to stop when she'd laid her eggs, but puzzled as to why it happened anyway?  Any ideas?

  • Hi Colin ,what strange behaviour ,have heard of the tapping on the bottom or sides of the nest box, but never to go completely through, maybe it a Blue tit /Woodpecker cross, hee!hee!

Let's hope someone more knowledgeable can let you know as to why , I would be interested to know, so I will keep a tag on this to see what comes up

    Regards Mick
