Last year when I cleaned out the bird box, I discovered that the timber was cracking up so I painted it with a water based outside paint, It does not have any smell attached to it but I wonder, will it put the birds using it again this year please or should I buy a new one 0please??

I'm always wary of the painted ones you see for sale. Most likely imported from China where they're non too fussy about using lead in paint even on children's toys according to one report I read.
