Hi i have put up a nest box for the first time. i have put it in the tree at the back of the garden and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me if i have done it correct. i have tried to uploaded some photos for you to look at but dont seem to be able to do it. it is on a hook but not fixed to the tree. does it have to be securely attached or is it ok to be swinging slightly!

Hi it is one of those 'concrete' type nesting boxes (i think thats what they are called) and at the moment it is suspended from the branch and i dont know if it shold be! if i can find out how to post a photo i will try and upload it. when i try to insert a photo it is saying it is too large.

It looks like one of the Woodcrete boxes which I haven't used. I would imagine it's fairly heavy so shouldn't blow about too much. The only thing I can suggest is to try and anchor it to another branch by wrapping another piece of wire around it. That would stop it moving in the wind.
As long as it is shaded when the leaves are on the trees I would have thought the siting would be OK.
At least it won't get attacked by woodpeckers which can be a problem with wooden boxes.
Hope you get something nesting in it.
I was once told that a Bird Box should not point a certain way, don't know if this is true or not.
Yes, generally it should not face the prevailing weather direction which in this country is usually south-west. Also, it should not be sited where it's the full glare of the sun because the young birds can cook.
I think if it's in a tree there's plenty of shade and shelter so it shouldn't be a problem.
Hi after securing box as suggested, I have had quite a few blue tits visiting, (or it may be the same one!! ) yesterday there were 2 one went in and the other stayed on branch, could this be male and female? It's the first time I have put a box up and I am getting quite excited that one may nest there.
Good luck! I have an old next box that has seen better days but has visitors every year. It's fab watching the chicks learning to fly around it. I made a new one at RSPB event last weekend and am hoping it will also attract visitors. Fab to watch. It sounds like you are having success already. Linnie x
