took this photo over the weekend, looks like he might be moving in, but just wondering if anyone knows why he keeps nibbling around the hole.... i think it looks big enough but wondered what everyone else thinks
Hi Rachel hope he is moving in. Perhaps because its a great tit the hole is slightly too small for his comfort. We added those metal covers to stop woodpeckers enlarging the hole and stealing the chicks. They come in different sizes
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
do you think i should take it down and enlarge the hole or leave it for the bird to do itself ? i dont want to interfer and the bird lose interest
Hi Rachel
That is a blue tit you have there, it's pecking at the entrance hole to get it just right for the nesting season ahead. Most blue tits exhibit this behaviour, both at natural and artificial sites, it does not seem to be about the size of the hole rather the look to the bird.
Expect this activity to go on until the birds are happy with the site, then they may turn their attention to nest building and courtship. Most blue tits start to breed from April but if conditions allow, it may be earlier.
Best not to interfere with the box, it is fine as it is and you will hopefully be able to enjoy watching this family develop through the spring and summer!

thanks for the advice, i will keep watching and keep you posted
i have heard that some birds peck around the holes prior to nesting to mark their territory, as far as i'm aware.

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I’ve seen.”
Whilst visiting the bird hide at a local country park we saw several blue tits nibbling the edges of an empty wooden feeding station, we wondered if they were REALLY hungry!
The early bird catches the worm. No wonder I`m always starving!
