Want to buy nesting boxes in October - i get robins, blackbirds, tits, starlings, nuthatches etc together with squirrels and the very occasional fox. Are they safe from harm (these boxes)? Will birds use them? How high up do they have to be? What do I do to them to make them attractive to birds?

I think they're social wasps , Claire. A queen and workers. It's about the size of a tennis ball at the moment but will get bigger throughout the summer. The biggest in Britain , 2 years ago , measured 6ft x 5ft

I'll take a photo of my nests tomorrow. They are literally about the size of an old fashioned light bulb. I don't see any social activity going on, so may be a different species of wasp.

Definitely at least half a dozen coming and going to this one.
Here are the wasp nests, Galatas. I think they must be last years but are typical of the several in the barn.
They do look a little different. Perhaps someone can identify mine from these pics
Don't try this at home :- )
A few more of the wasps to ID for me and Claire
Do the Mods think that perhaps this ought to be split off now that it has deviated from nest boxes ?
