I've already mentioned that I'm cutting the pyracantha hedge right back in the autumn - and I was thinking, I know house sparrows seem to use the hedge so would it be worth putting up a house sparrow terrace on the wall behind the hedge? The hedge is very prickly - and will be even more so as I'm going to attempt to add a holly shrub into the mix as there will be a gap between the pyracantha (they killed another shrub that was originally there). It will be pretty low down, but should be pretty safe and the sparrows do like spending time in the hedge.

Hi Kat,
The accepted advice on nest boxes for sparrows is they should be high up - they like to nest in the eaves of houses, so unless your wall is 15 feet high, you will probably get blue tits! You will probably get blue tits anyway!!! Sparrows do like hedges, but only for cover during the day.
Cheers, Linda.

Thanks Sparrow, I figured it was worth asking. Guess I'll be putting out nestboxes for the other birdies then! :-)
We had a Great Tit nest box about 8ft high on side of bungalow and last year House Sparrows used it so we put a 3 box terrace up specially for them close to it but so far have not used it perhaps a bit new looking.
