I was just sitting here typing away, replying to some posts and threads when I noticed that my typing suddenly sounded very much louder. I could hear a reverberation coming from somewhere but I couldn't work out what it was. It eventually sounded like someone was possibly hammering on the wooden fence
So I walked to the window, and all of the Starlings and Wood Pigeons on the lawn flew off. However, I could still hear this mystery sound. By now, realisation was dawning what it was, so I opened the patio door, went outside, and turned the corner of the house to find my Great Spotted Woodpecker hammering away at the front of my Nestbox.
The culprit earlier this morning:
The target:
The day before yesterday my Blue Tits fledged out of this nestbox, and there wasn't a mark anywhere on it. I couldn't fail to hear that hammering noise no matter where I was in the house, so this damage was done in less than 3 minutes when I was listening to it today.
I wouldn't normally be pleased about scaring off my GSW but today I am. One question eludes me though: wouldn't he know whether there were baby birds in there or not? Surely he wouldn't get a headache for an empty nestbox?
I'm going to have to break the news to my OH that a repair will be necessary.
Best wishes Chris

Hi everyone
Further to my GSW nestbox attack, I have now repaired my nestbox with some Milliput, and it now has a new copper plate on the front so it's almost like it was before, and is ready for reoccupation.
My brand new Avianex 'des res' is now nearby on the same wall.
Hi chris
Well done with the repair work to your box
The new birdbox looks very impressive - what is it made of?
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Well done on repairing your box, Chris. Looks a very professional job. You're ahead of me, I haven't had time to fix the damage. It will have to wait until I return from my trip.
I like the look of your new Woodcrete box. The woodpecker would find it tough to break into that.

Hi Kathy
I think TJ has already answered your question. It's called Woodcrete and I believe it's a mixture of sawdust, cement and clay. Schwegler in Germany make them and Jacobi Jayne are the UK importers
Thankyou Chris
Had not seen TJ's answer until now - thanks TJ {big smile}
