Blue tits have now stopped coming to the nesting box Diaster!

Hi everyone,

I have some very bad news indeed, in late March my female blue tit started making a nest in my nestbox, after finishing their nest building they started laying an egg a day until the 4th egg, after that nothing happened the blue tits have not been seen in the nestbox since then.

It has been for a week like this, with nothing happening at all.

It was only today when I saw the bluetits again, the female blue tit did come near, but did not enter it, that is what I think.

Do think that they are first time parents and don't know what to do or is it too early for them to lay eggs.

So what is going on??!! and what can I do?

Thanks

Abba

  • Abba,

Do nothing and keep your fingers crossed.   Blue tits are active when building.   Less active when laying as they only need to pop in once a day to lay an egg (probably before you are up).  The eggs could be hidden under their duvet.      When sitting there is not a lot of activity.   It is only when the young are hatched that the activity starts again in earnest.

Just hope they are going through a quiet phase.    Don't go near it it might put them off.

  • I've had a simular problem I had a family of Great Tits who first moved into my nestbox in 2003 and continued coming back until 2008 while they were busy prepareing building their nest they were getting hassled by a House Sparrow Family (god knows why they didn't go into the House Sparrow nestbox I have out) and they eventually evicted The Great Tit family but unfortuantly they were not successful and since then (though a few Blue Tits checked out the box) no ome has moved in though I do miss my Great Tits I wonder if they or anyone else would return.

  • My father had blue tits build in a nest box in his garden this year and he was so excited as he had a camera fitted inside it. After building the nest they just disappeared for several days, as you can imagine he was really disappointed. I went around his house last week and he said "have a look at this" turned the TV on and blow me they were back and had laid nine (9) eggs!!......he was pretty chuffed as you can imagine!!
