New nest build going on

The blue tits have finally started to build their nest see them a few times a day, all lokks good on the camera.  Living up north do the birds nest later than the warmer southern birds lol.  When should i expect the nest to be built, and the first eggs appear.  Thanks craig

  • Hi Craig

I live down south (Berkshire) and my blue tit has been building for the last couple of weeks or so. However, I've noticed that it's been much more frantic over the last few days and a lot of downy material and feathers are being brought in. I reckon egg laying must be imminent.  Here's a snapshot showing what it's like inside the box at the moment.

I imagine they time egg laying so that there's an adequate supply of insects when the chicks hatch. It would therefore be logical to expect that laying may take place a little later the further north you are but by how much I don't know.

There's some facts and figures about blue tits including typical incubation and fledging times on this BTO webpage which you might like to read.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi MADNESS

Some already have eggs and I saw a great tit collecting caterpillers this morning so its probably feeding young.    Barnsley area

No action here at all in West Lancashire.

Our Hawthorn is only just bursting into leaf and lots of birds will start nesting once there is thick enough cover.

    Cheers
