Chippy bluetit!

We have a cam nest box, the hole is for a  blue tit and one has been roosting in the box for 3 weeks now.  In the daytime two birds have been visiting and have been chipping  away inside and out at the hole in the box.  Added to this, one bird has been in the box in the daytime and has been also chipping away at the back wooden panel and is making quite a large mark in the wood, if he carries on he will be through to the tree trunk the box is attached to!  Has anybody got a theory as to why this is happening and are the birds likely to make a nest there?  We live in North Yorkshire so would birds nest later here?

  • They do chip away at the box before they start nesting - I think it's a territorial thing, a bit like putting down a deposit on your new house!

There is a good chance they will start nesting soon - and yes, the further North you go, the later things do tend to get moving.

Thanks BB, yes a nest is forming, though we think the bird is a novice like us, she seems to take as much stuff out as she brings in!
