I did do a search to see if anyone had asked this before but it didn't really come up with anything.
What type if any of nestbox do Long-tailed Tits favour?
I have had lots in my garden all winter and a couple now that look like they have paired up.
Thanks for your help
Nicola
They do not use nest boxes as far as I am aware. They have an elastic ball of moss, spiders' webs, lichen, feathers, and hair that is built by both birds in a bush, hedge or tree; brambles and gorse are favourite places. The nest may take up to 3 weeks to build and be lined with more than 2000 feathers.
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
Hi Niknac
I don't think they particularly use nest boxes either. I can't find anything about a nest box for a LTT.
They make lovely little nests out of spiders webs and moss in dense bushes
Best wishes Chris

Hi NikNak
Sorry - bit of a non-answer but...
I must admit I've never seen them in nest boxes. The nests they do build however are incredibly intricate - mostly cobweb and lichen, often in the crux of a silver beech tree. So well camouflaged in fact they are really hard to spot! Will see if I can find a pic.
Edit:
Found a pic, not especially great but you'll see what I mean! :)
Hi there,
Like everyone says, Long-tails don't use nestboxes as they are not cavity nesters. They are not closely related to our other tits, and differ from them in several key respects.

Thanks for your replies, perhaps I won't be able to bribe them with a des res after all, I'll have to hope they bring their babies to my restaurant instead.
