Hi everyone
I have already posted last week that I suspected I had a pair of sparrows using my camera nestbox.
A male has used it for roosting since november, but since friday last week (4th march), I was chuffed to see a female in there. I wasnt sure at first wether they were a nesting pair (because of my lack of experience), or wether the female just wanted to take over Mr sparrows home, because it seemed everytime the male entered the nestbox the female would peck him like mad, poor thing, and he would fly off.
I have come to the conclusion since watching the them over the weekend that they are definatley a nesting pair. They have both been very busy bringing in nesting material, (mrs sparrow still seems to like pecking the Mr though LOL).
Well a lot has happened since friday, and I thought it would be a nice idea to post on here and share my excitement that maybe just maybe I will see baby sparrows quite soon.
They are so very funny to watch, they have collected hay, feathers, tumble dryer fluff(lol), and even a sweet wrapper to build the nest. Here are a few pics, they are not brill quality as im taking pics of my tv, but hope you enjoy.
this was friday
and these were taken today, the last 1 just 30 minutes ago.
Im so excited, and they are amazingly funny to watch:)
To be continued............
Awww such a cutie :)
Do you offer some nesting material?
'Dip a dee dah, dip a dee ay, we're not seeing any birds to-day...'

Hi tern
Yes I do. I have put out some hay and spread about in a long box that i used to have strawberries grow in, ive also put some fluff out from my tumble dryer as I heard on the forums that others collect the fluff for the birds. They have also been picking at 1 of my plants too :)

they are so funny to watch. Yes that do sound like they are encouraging the females, because for a few days last week, in my nestbox, the male was making his presence known by sticking his head out of the hole and he was very noisy, and within a few days I noticed the female in there. Its really interesting because for the last 2 nights the female is staying in the nestbox on her own, but in the day both male and female have been working hard preparing the nest. I also read about this too, and it said that the male will be nearby.......aww sweet or what? LOL
Im no expert but I think sparrows will nest pretty much anywhere if they can fit in, my nestbox was intended for great tits, I also have 2 sparrow terraces up but ive seen no interest in them yet.
Yes please post some pics:)
Oh that is so exciting, i would be glued to the screen all day. Poor Mr Sparrow, I wonder if that's what they mean when they say hen pecked ! Can't wait to see what happens next ...
Linda
What a wonderful world :))
Hi Bekky,
My gang had 4 lots of babies last year - they nested in the eaves of a neighbouring house at the back of me, but brought all the babies to my garden to feed. I had them for what seemed like months. It was absolutely amazing. You are so lucky to have them in your camera box.
