We bought a box with camera from Aldi last year and after a Spring and Summer of no visitors at all we were delighted to find a Blue tit roosting in early Autumn.
We have really enjoyed his watching him over the winter and I was thrilled to observe other Blue tits having a look into the box over recent weeks.
My only complaint is that he is very, very messy and the floor of the nestbox is now covered with his deposits! I'm concluding it's a male after looking around the web and seeing that females tidy up after themselves (usual story ladies!!!!)
My question is should we empty the box or is nature best left alone?
I'd appreciate any advice.
Thank you!
Hi Billy,
Snap!!!
I also bought the Aldi camera box last year, and had a rooster immediately but no nest. In spring, he brought his wife to look at his bachelor pad. She did her best to clean it out, then gave it up as a bad job and the pair moved elsewhere to build a nest. There was an awful lot of poo!!
I cleaned out the box in October, and a day or two later the rooster came back and has been with me every night since. Last week I cleaned him out because I'm sure that was the only reason they didn't nest. He is still roosting, but the second he brings his wife to look, I will sweep it out to help her along.
Cheers, Linda.
