As the National nest-box weeks draws to a close ,I thought I must share this "nest box" story with you all
When we moved here 11 years ago the garage was made from concrete cavity blocks and the mortar was not evenly laid between the blocks ,this left a hole or two that the blue-tits saw as a great way of making a natural nest site in the cavity.
This they did to our delight ,and over the next 4 years they successfully reared lots of young, but then to follow on with the renovation work,we had to have the walls rendered, and we didn't want to cover the holes ,as the blue-tits would be back in the springtime to nest again.
(what to do)? I placed a pole into the hole and left it there until the rendered hardened off ,then being a bit DIY minded ,I placed board over the front ,to make it look somewhat like a conventional nest-box.
I was pleased to say that this worked and they have been returning successfully breading every year since I installed it.
Does this make it the biggest nest-box on record? LOL
Work is for those people that don't Bird-watch!!!!
Hi Grandpaddy
That is such a lovely story. It just goes to show how far some people go to look after the wild birds that visit them. :-)
Best wishes Chris

Im sursprised the blue tits arent singing you songs like " RETURN TO RENDERED.... ADDRESS STILL KNOWN "......... lol
Hi Grandpaddy,
What a lovely story! I love the pic of the blue tit going in his "old" nest. Is that a worm in his mouth?
Cheers, Linda.
