Help yourself, please!

I put up a nest box in the front garden last year and nobody visited. So this year I put some fine wood shavings inside to encourage a Tit to take up residence. Oh, imagine my joy and excitement as I saw a Bluetit stick his head in, then go all the way in . .  . After a few minutes he emerged, looked around Ghent flew off.

I excitedly called my wife and told her the good news an together we watched to see if the Bluetit returned. Joy oh joy as about three minuets latter the bird returned with a 'friend' and they both went in. After a little while a head appeared, the bird emerged beak filled with shavings and flew off, closely followed by the mate also with beak loaded with MY shavings.

What a cheek! What a blooming cheek!

My nest box is now empty again . . . . . .

  • Oh! I'm sorry, but that did give me a chuckle! :-D

    Best wishes

    Val.

  • Hi david

Oh dear! How annoying is that. (I'm trying not to simile at the vision of these 2 blue tits making off with your shavings)

You never know, you might still attract a pair to your nestbox.

It's not over until the fat lady sings. :-)

    Best wishes Chris

  • LOL David.

Exactly the same thing happened to me last year, except I put shredded paper inside. It ended up all over my garden!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Oh my goodness your post had me laughing.  I opened the front door today to startle a great tit who was obviously collecting bits for the nest.  I walked down to the mail box as the gt had flown on top of the fence just about six feet from the front door.  I came back, and the GT was still on the fence.  It waited until I came back inside, scooped down and picked up it's goods and flew off.  I didn't catch where it flew off too though.

So sorry for your disappointment, but it was a nice gesture on your part, and it was funny as......

Enjoy every today for what it is, you never know if you'll wake up tomorrow!

Ha ha that did make me laugh David....

Good for you to be the new place which supplies free bedding for all the birds in you area apparently there's a sign at the bottom of your street....

"Visit David at number 00 free bedding for collection only!"

I have two boxes to put up this coming weekend so it might be me sobbing next week.....although amazing what you can do with a little super glue!...........(only joking!)

  • Nice  Story David, i tried really hard not to laugh, but failed.  Sorry.   Never thought of putting some shavings into my boxes before.

My boxes are quite new and so far untouched, but if other posters have noticed birds collecting materials already i had better put my nesting material spiral up soon, left it indoors till now to keep it dry.

Better luck next time David & good luck.

    Snigger.

What a lovely story- I must admit I have never put anything into my nest boxes and it amazes me what the birds do use for the nesting material. When we had two dogs they used to use their hair but now they seem to like my basket liners too much!

  • I had that a couple of years ago and what was more annoying next door never put out any food for them so they also used my bird food to feed the young chicks lol.

  • What a delightful story, made me laugh on this dreary February morning. I hope to put a nest box up this weekend just hope it is not too late. Will not try to provide extras for any potential guests!
