I purchased the RSPB (£100 +) nestbox before I saw the better priced Aldi ones on the forum :-(
I was surprised that the RSPB nestbox is not treated with wood preservative. The advice is included which recommends painting with a non toxic preservative; does anyone have a brand suitable for this that doesnt harm the birds.
Many thanks
Is that the one with the camera? I too bought one from the local garden centre for £59 just the week before the Aldi ones were on sale, and it is not preserved either. The one I bought is a black and white camera versus the Aldi one being a colour camera. However, I think that with both the one I purchased and your RSPB one, you will find the cameras are likely better quality. At least, that's what I'm going to tell myself.
Enjoy every today for what it is, you never know if you'll wake up tomorrow!
Hi Millie.
I'm not alone.
Thanks for your reply. The RSPB one is with a camera - B&W plus colour during the day. I havent set it up yet but thought it best to get the wood preserving done firstly. I need the actual brand name of a suitable preservartive and I am surprised the the RSPB didnt recommend one or include preservative in the total cost of £100 plus. ('Because its worth it')
Hi there,
This is cut'n'pasted from the RSPB's page on making a nestbox:
It's always best to leave the box untreated. As it weathers, it will blend into its surroundings. Softwood boxes can be treated with selected water-based preservatives, which are known to be safe for animals, such as Sadolin. Apply it only to the outside of the box, and not around the entrance hole. Make sure the box dries and airs thoroughly before you put it up.

Hi Osprey
I did a Google search for non-toxic wood preservatives and found this.

I have no personal knowledge of the product so can't vouch for it but it sounds OK. Hope this helps.

Hi Osprey,
It doesn't take much to confuse me, but I have just had a major moment of confusion. We have another Osprey on the forum who is a regular contributor. It may be better if you could change your name to avoid further confusion??
I hope your new camera box is successful and wish you many happy hours of watching!
Cheers, Linda.

Thank you very much Aiki. 'Sadolin' is the word I needed. Now I just need a bit of a nice day with some sunshine and no rain.

I didn't realise I was talking to a "different" Osprey. I am surprised the RSPB registration system doesn't filter out duplicate names.
Thanks Sparrow. Will change name as that was the first to come to mind. Maybe Wagtail or Kestrel......??
As far as I know Wagtail or Kestrel aren't used so go for it! :)

I cant seem to find a list of all forum members so picking a name is a bit problematic.........................
