Think "outside the box"

It would be an idea for the RSPB to have a competition for bird box designs. I think it would encourage people to build and erect boxes.( You wouldn't have to stick to traditional designs) I have built many boxes, and hid them in different places, they do not all get used for nesting, but most get used for roosts, which especially in the cold weather is just as important.

  • Great idea Paul,

Like you i have placed nest boxes in lots of different places sometimes ive been lucky but either way i think its offering them opertunities and safe places to sleep that counts, To push further on this i wondered if it would be possible to start some sort of campaign to erect boxes on telegraph poles (theres millions of them make do trees) not sure what national grid would think of this idea? but we should make sure the poles are not damaged and nest boxes do not stop them carring out there checks, (start making boxes i think?)

i love the competition idea... but imo it would need to have some guidelines so that people didn't build incompatible bird boxes

  • Cool idea!

I agree, today I saw a 'birdbox' which was about a size of a mug cup, hanging from a tree. And I mean a birdbox, not just a pretty hanging ornament!

'Dip a dee dah, dip a dee ay, we're not seeing any birds to-day...'

  • Only one thing wrong with erecting boxes on telegraph poles Shawry, what happens when they need to climb them in order to make repairs?  Do they have to wait until the chicks have fledged or do they risk being attacted by some irrate mother bird?

Although I had plenty of nests in the garden last spring, only one Robin used a box. Nevertheless I will be putting up my new nest box that I had for Christmas in the hope that they like pink.

  • Fantastic looking box Cottagegardener even politically correct could encourage gay birds from the travelling comunity please ensure you get pictures of chicks when they start to fledge iam sure nest boxes like this will make gardens a happier place i must get my thinking cap on tommorow?, with regards to the telegraph poles never thought of the disturbance factor but providing all the new nest sights can only be positive and i think disturbance would be minimum.
