Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know how to attract birds to a nest box.
I really need some advice.
1 Blue Tit this last summer just looked at the nest box and went away.
HELP!
Best Wishes,
Superior Eagle

You can't really do anything to attract them to a nest box, if they find it suitable they will use it though it can take a couple of years for them to do so or it may never get used at all. Have a think if it is in the right position - is it out of reach of predators such as cats and crows, is the entrance hole easily accessible, is it facing the right way, is it in an area that gets too hot or cold, is there enough cover nearby...there are lots of things to consider that may make a bird reject a nesting site. It may simply be the case that there are much better options nearby!

Hi SE,
I annually check over 500 nest boxes each year. The uptake differs year on year.
Kat has given some great advice and location is normally key.
If you are thinking of relocating it. It needs to be done now.
Good luck.

Hi,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the advice everyone!
Thank you for this post and sharing the info. i got a nestbox for xmas and after reading this, I now have new found motivation to actualy put it up somewhere! ;-) I'm guessing west facing would not be good, due to prevailing wind/weather?

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the link.
Nest boxes - Good Question !!!
Here's mine ; I have quite a lot of woodland and open space outside my house ( house faces a field ) with good cover nearby, hawthorn etc and I wondered about attracting something like little owls. I heard them locally, but short of putting an ad in Bird Watching weekly, Owl Dez Rez for rent. I'd be interested in peoples views.
Cheers Elmer
i have not put out a nest box before, so this year will be my first time i have one with a camera in it purchased from aldi one robin nest box purcased from aldi the others i am making myself out of logs which i will hollow out one is nearly done it needs a roof and bracket and my dad to put it up, while i was making the log bird box the sparrows seemed interested they perched high in a leylandi tree looking down at me and they were twitering away. one of the logs will be made into a twin all in one sparrow nest log 2 seperate chambers with hatches either side for ease of acces for cleaning out the nest log. it takes a long time to hollow out a log it will be worth it to provide a home for a bird to start a family.
