I'm thinking of buying a bird box or two for the garden but am fairly limited on where they can go. I keep reading that they have to face between North and East, but in our garden the only thing that faces in that direction which is tall enough to put a bird box on is our shed. My concern is that I don't want to disturb the birds by going to the shed as I'm going to be starting to grow my seeds for this year soon so will be going in and out of the shed fairly often.
Is it too late to put up a bird box now anyway? I have no idea when birds mate and the fledlings hatch and fly the nest.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

Hi Teddyfan,
First you need to decide what species of bird you would like to see nesting. Sparrows for example like to nest close together and high up - near the eaves of a house. Tits are less fussy and will nest much lower down.
It isn't too late at all. They don't normally nest until March, but again how long they nest for depends on the species. Some just have one brood, others have as many as three broods.
It isn't a good idea to have a box facing south or towards strong sunlight or prevailing winds.
Have you considered a camera nest box? I wouldn't be without mine.

Ideally I would love to have robins nesting in a bird box as we had 5 in the garden this morning and a robin has got really used to me being around and always comes out and onto the perch where I put meal worms when I go out into the garden. I can also now get fairly close to him/her with my camera which is great.
I too get regular visits from Robins in my garden. I had as many as 4 at once over the recent cold spell. I have got 2 nest boxes situated in fairly secluded spots, but can not get them to use them. I have no idea why. Anybody any ideas how we can get them to breed anybody?
There are 9000 species of bird on earth. Let's keep it that way.

The RSPB give good advice about nest boxes on the link that TeeJay has given in his post. There are other sites that also good advice about nest boxes.
There have also been many previous posts about nest boxes and you might find what you need by looking at these search results

Do you go into your shed a lot? I will be starting a lot of gardening soon and I don't want to cause the bird to abandon the nest
