Hi. I'm fairly new to birdwatching. I have a bird box that I'd like to put in a tree in my garden. Is there a particular time of year that I should do this or could I put it out now? I think I've read somewhere that a nestbox shouldn't be south facing-any other tips? Also, is it likely to damage the tree if I put long screws into it ? I don't want to damage the tree and have it falling over eventually!! Thanks!

You should erect your nestbox as soon as possible. Autumn is usually the recommended time so the birds discover it and get used to it but it will probably be fine now.
There's an article on the main RSPB site about the siting and fixing of boxes which you can read about here. If you have to use nails use aluminium ones as they won't corrode like steel but if you can do it without nails or screws that is preferable.

Shoud face N TO NE. high enough from cats. If the tree is a conifer I would say a wall rather than the tree as cats climb and hide in mine also the old magpie can easily get to it.

a good laugh is better than a tonic
All ours are tied using polypropylene rope. None have come adrift yet and it is easy to alter aspect or remove for cleaning, or somewhere else.
