i built a nest with wood pieces and iron wire and plan to hang it one the wall of the garden next Feb, when the ivy grow full of the nest, i think it can be a nice box for song birds.
plz tell me what do u think about this idea?
thanks

my little secret garden¬
Hi nan
In my humble opinion all of the sides need to be a solid material rather than wire. Otherwise nesting material, eggs or chicks could fall out between the wires, or the temperature won't stay even enough through warm or cold weather.
The fact that manufacturers make nest boxes a solid structure must mean that it is the version that birds prefer.
Best wishes Chris

Hi Nan, I can see you have lots of creative ideas. But when it comes to nest boxes there are lots of factors to take into consideration and Woodpecker has pointed out some important ones already. Solid boxes provide protection from predators as well as shelter. What would happen to the young if the ivy died back or was removed?Claire
hi nan i agree with the others comments, but i would like to say i am
admiring your soldering, it must have taken you a long time, and if you
had done that at my night class you would have got top marks. best regards mac
p.s. (ex plumber)
awesome workmanship - really lovely! although i do agree with the other comments i wouldnt completely discount it! If you kept a solid base and the ivy did take hold then it would offer more support/protection than if a bird was starting from scratch... i think the predation issue would be the most pressing weakness so it would have to be hidden away well...
It looks lovely but have to agree with the others and also the ivy will grow through the cage and fill it up as quick as you can blink and the birds wouldn't be able to get in or out but 10 out of 10 for effort.
