Are sparrows still nesting or just roosting?

I've got two holes in the wall of my house which have sparrows in every day.  I've heard that sparrows can sometimes breed year-round.  I need to evict the sparrows from one of these holes - and before i do anything I want to be sure that they are only roosting in there and there is no chance they are nesting.  I can't really see inside so is there another way i can make certain? (or is it very rare and therefore unlikely that they are still nesting at this time of year)

I'm going to put a terrace up next to the old hole in the hope that they'll start using that instead before I do anything else - any advice on how long it might take them to get used to it?

Thanks for your help

  • They are probably just roosting at this time of year as they stay in colonies all year round. However, as there is cold weather due next week I don't really think now will be the best time to evict them from their roosting site. It could take them a while to get used to the box, and they may not use it at all and decide to find somewhere else.
  • Hi Matt

I don't know if my idea will affect the vent.

Put a box over the hole without a back on and see if the sparrows will use the hole in the box to get to where they are roosting. iF THEY DO then after a couple of days replace the back and move the box as neaar as you can to where they have been roosting and do your work. hopefully they will consider that the hole in the box is where they broost. suggest some straw or something in the box with the back on.

        Regards  Ray
