I hope to get a Sparrow Terrace for Christmas but was wondering if it would be better to get maybe 3 single nest boxes and put them together.
If I do not get any sparrows I could then move the boxes for other birds.
What do you think?

Hello Rachel....Well, Sparrows are communal nesters so if you have seen enough of them it stands a good chance that they will colonise your "terrace", like most other seed eaters these days they have diminished with the increasing ploughing up of stubble for winter wheat.....obviously they would take advantage of your superb cuisine I saw you mention the other day so food would not be a problem......they are also very comical with their constant fighting and argueing and a great source of amusement...give it a go, you can always get separate boxes for the other birds any time..........Best of luck
Hi Rachel last year my terrace was occupied by a pair of Bluetits who decided on building three different nests two of which contained unhatched eggs. Due to the confusion the birds left, the poor female sat on the nests for over a month. This year i will be putting cameras into the terrace, hopefully if i see this happening again i maybe able to stop the eggs from unhatching again. Hope yours is a success Craig
Just joined this forum, so I apologise for the late reply. Just a point on your Sparrow terrace. What size holes have you got in the boxes? Generally sparrows require a hole around 30mm diameter, whereas blue tit's are better with a small hole of 25mm diameter. I think the main reason for this is to stop birds like woodpeckers from predating the nest.
I made a sparrow terrace last year, but got no result at all. House Sparrows are a very rare visitor to my garden, so I hope you have more luck.

Hi there,
There's some evidence that you're more likely to get multiple pairs of House Sparrows if you use individual boxes sited fairly close together - sometimes with terraces one dominant pair will monopolise the whole thing and only one of the three boxes gets used.

Cannot see why 3 single boxes would not work, As to where to site them i made a three section one for my sons school so they could site it next to the veg plot no more than 30 yards from school and they were very lucky and got sparrows first time this terrace was fixed to a six foot boundary fence(wire and post)
