Nest/Roosting Boxes (Plastic Flower Pots)

Following my description yesterday for using old flower pots to make nest and roosting boxes, I attach two photos to help those willing to make some of their own....You will note that the tape I used in this case was a simple packing which has a strong bond...the two halves were joined together and held in place by a silicone sealant.....you could use any method to enable the bonding as long as it is strong enough.....Also, at the access end I have left one of the outer holes uncovered as a drain if required....obviously you would ensure that this was at the lowest point when locating the box.......seal the other end totally....You will also note that the access hole has tape on the perimeter....this is to take off the sharp edges since these flower pots are thin and may cut their feet on entry......you will find it very gratifying when they start to use your box and as I said earlier, you have spent virtually nothing to help them......I have 20 of them in my hedges right now with a 75% occupation.....get building and see what happens....it will take around two weeks for them to get used to these new strange objects in your hedge, but then they will eventually see what these properties offer.....If there are no takers after a while then reposition your box since they may dislike the location....try and face the access hole away from the north and easterly winds that will soon be upon us...also, not directly into the prevailing south westerly rain storms....it's fussy I know, but well worth the effort, the birds will tell you when the position is right, learn from them and you will see............Have Fun
