Winter nest boxes

After watching the Johnny English documentary and seeing just how many wrens he attracted to his nest box does anyone know what is the best kind of box for over-wintering birds such as blue tits and wrens? Also the best location? We would love to be able to attract them in.

Julie

  • We have had several Wrens in winter crowd into a nestbox that Great Tits use in spring

  • No - I meant my mistaking Johnny English and my wine drinking - I have no doubts about your owl box!

Many thanks Sooty as well. I think we will try a variety of boxes.

I should learn not to drink and post! (How bad does that sound?)

  • Wine drinking here but I'm still able to say that last winter we had 1 housemartin nest that had a hoast of wrens waiting to pop in in the snowy weather. The row that there was when it was full was really loud, full was between 9/10. They really seemed to be disappointed if there was no space.

Unfortunately the house martins did return but the house sparrows decided that they'd take over so 1.5 nest that have now fallen from the eaves :-( Might have to find some wee roost pockets for the garden myself!!

    Hi-

wrens will use standard nest boxes in winter ; Keep an eye on your box in the winter :) Alternatively put a box in a warm quiet location ( eg; under ivy)  and check it in daylight occasionally.

ps- Johnny English was that spy played by Rowan Atkinson spoofing his spy character Latham from the Barclaycard adverts- he was no birder, he used bins in a rubber boat with no strap. On the other hand he did get to hang out with Natalie Imbruglia- but NOT in a nestbox .
