this idea is based on weather vane. i want to make a winter box which  the hole can always avoid the winter strong wind blow into.

Hi nan

       Just put a nestbox in a sheltered place

       anything that moves won't work

       Might be ok for the parrots at flamingo land but not wild birds.

     Although there was a bluetit built inside a cover on a level crossing gate did you see it on the tele

Ray is right, just put the nestbox in a sheltered spot or in a bushy plant like ivy. :-)

Seriously though, a bird box on a weathervane isn't going to work, sorry to be the bringer of bad news but its just a non-starter. If you want to protect birds nesting boxes from being exposed to the wind then choose the location sensibly, choose an aspect away from the prevailing wind direction.

North or east facing boxes are usally the best as the predominant wind direction through much of the birds breeding season is from the south west. If you want to provide birds with a roosting box over winter then as has been previously suggested, choosing protected sites is the way forward.

As for who is ivy, well she is a native climber otherwise known as Hedera helix and she is one of the best wildlife plants to have in the garden!
